Active after-school communities

Background

The Active After-School Communities (AASC) Program is a structured physical activity program delivered nationally to children enrolled in Australian primary schools and Childcare Benefit (CCB) approved Out of School Hours Care Services (OSHCS) during the after school timeslot.

The Active After-School Communities Program is managed through the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and aims to improve the health and well being of Australia's primary school aged children by tackling the growing problem of declining physical activity and poor eating habits. Duration

The Program commenced in 2005 and is ongoing. The Program is presently funded to operate to 2011.

Grant funding

Schools can apply for grant funds of between $753 and $3518 per term. The total amount available to a school or OSHC will be determined based on the number of participants and the number of sessions conducted each week. Funding will be provided for the duration of the Program.

The Program will be funded to run for a maximum of 7 weeks each term. If a school wishes to extend the Program beyond 7 weeks per term, the additional costs are to be met by the school.

A school wishing to discontinue the Program should notify the Regional Coordinator in writing. The Australian Sports Commission may discontinue a Program where a site appraisal by the Regional Coordinator determines a Program is no longer meeting the AASC requirements.

Available funding for each session where the Program is run by the school (if it is run through the OSHCS facility, the amounts are reduced):

Less than 15 participants: $85 - $105 per session

15 - 30 participants: $100 - $120 per session

31 - 49 participants: $120 - $140 per session

50 plus participants: $140 - $160 per session

Grant funding will cover all costs associated with the delivery of the Program including deliverers fees, supervision, equipment, afternoon tea, transport (if required) and any other associated costs.

Special initiative grant

The application based Special Initiative Grant provides funds to enhance the delivery and reach of the Active After-school Communities (AASC) Program, with a focus on quality and building on the strengths and commitment within the community to provide opportunities for children to participate within structure physical activities.

Applications need to demonstrate:
