Buyer guides (or registered product lists) can make it easier for schools to select healthy food and drink products. Two non-government organisations currently produce buyer guides; FOCiS and the NSW School Canteen Association. Although the nutritional criteria used by each of these organisations to register products is slightly different than that of Smart Choices, the lists can assist schools in making selections of products that fit into the GREEN or AMBER categories of Smart Choices.
It is important to be aware that registration of a food or drink product is not compulsory, that is, food and drinks do not have to appear on a buyers guide to be eligible for supply in schools. Food companies choose to register their products or not on the buyers guide and pay a fee to gain the benefits of appearing in a buyers guide. The Queensland Government does not register or endorse any food or drink products.
The FOCiS registered product list contains food products that are better choices for school tuckshops. All products in the FOCiS list fall into the GREEN or AMBER category of Smart Choices.

Even though this buyers guide is from NSW, nearly all of the products registered in the Healthy Kids School Canteen Association 'Healthy Kids' buyers guide can be purchased in Queensland. Products are listed in the guide as either GREEN or AMBER.
