Overarching Guidelines

  • Meet the Australian Government requirement that at least 2 hours of physical activity is included in the curriculum each week
  • Promote skills for lifelong participation and enjoyment in a range of physical activity (team work, goal setting, practice, help seeking)
  • Create a safe and challenging environment for participation in physical activity
  • Incorporate relevant departmental safety guidelines
  • Reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents and Australian Guide to Healthy Eating
  • Develop hands-on skills to select and prepare a variety of nutritiously sound meals
  • Display sensitivity to students' self-esteem and body image
  • Program bias toward competitive physical activities
  • Fitness testing approaches and Body Mass Index as measures of health
  • Implementing programs that have limited potential to make a long-term contribution
  • Promote strict food rules or diets
  • Programs/resources that take a problem-based approach (that is, obesity prevention)
  • Recommend products or practices that promise quick fix, secret or miracle cures for everyone
  • Promote vitamin supplements to students/parents and staff
  • Use food and/or exercise diaries for longer than a week
