Introducing the Student Health and Wellbeing Curriculum Framework

Student health and wellbeing issues should be addressed primarily in the context of the Years 1-10 Health and Physical Education syllabus External Link. It is acknowledged there will be other aspects of curriculum, school policies and procedures, and community partnerships that will also contribute to and enhance student health and wellbeing in the school setting. However, this Framework refers only to the formal curriculum components mentioned previously.

The Student Health and Wellbeing Curriculum Framework provides a coordinated approach in which a range of health issues can be addressed in the curriculum from Years P to 12.

The Framework focuses on developing education programs that have a skills-based approach, rather than teaching health as various separate topics. It highlights the links between health issues and student health and wellbeing through the development of a common set of personal and interpersonal skills, including decision making, communication, assertiveness and self-esteem, that underpin health behaviours in a range of contexts. It also provides guidelines and appropriate content for addressing specific health issues.

The Framework provides:

This Framework is designed for all teachers, including teachers of health and physical education and/or personal development programs. It is based on research findings and best practice in schools and is designed to be flexible, allowing adaptation to the context and existing work of individual schools. The Framework should be used in conjunction with relevant syllabus documents and departmental policies to enhance the way student health and wellbeing issues are addressed in schools.
