Since 2008, Queensland schools have been participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.
Through the program, schools receive up to $60 000 to build their own kitchen and garden to give students hands-on experience growing, harvesting and preparing fresh food directly from their school garden.
During the 2011-2012 financial year, the Queensland Government has committed $1.82 million to expand the national program. This added funding will allow a further 25 Queensland state primary schools to adopt the program.
This investment supports the Healthy Queensland Target for 2020 by encouraging healthy eating habits and the Department of Education and Training is proud to partner with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation to help promote healthy eating and cooking in our state schools.
