QIECC

The Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Committee (QIECC) is a body of 13 prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experts in education and training formed in February 2006.

The Committee directly advises the Queensland Minister for Education, Training and the Arts and the Federal Minister for Education Science and Training regarding issues concerning or related to Indigenous education, training and the higher education.

The Committee is comprised of Indigenous members with significant expertise in Indigenous education and training. The Committee brings together a broad range of skills and experience, and a commitment to work hard to improve education standards and experiences for Indigenous students in Queensland.

There is a great deal of success being achieved by Indigenous students and young people, their communities and their schools, which is why the current Committee have included recognition of success and achievement as a stand alone priority area as part of its Strategic Plan. Early childhood education is also a stand alone priority area, recognising the importance of a child's introduction to formal education and the quality of early childhood education programs and delivery, in influencing the direction that these children 's lives will take.

There remains a lot of work to be done for Indigenous students in Queensland, where issues of disadvantage are exacerbated by the remote location of many of our communities. The Committee also acknowledge unique issues that Indigenous students in urban settings are faced with.

The QIECC consults with Indigenous communities and uses their combined knowledge and expertise to recommend strategies to create a future with a wide range of opportunities and options for Indigenous Queenslanders.

The QIECC holds regular community forums and an annual forum in October each year.
