Scholarships

Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships

The Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships (previously the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Teaching Scholarships) were developed to assist aspiring teachers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent to complete their degrees and make a difference in education.

The scholarships provide financial assistance to scholarship holders to gain degrees in education at Queensland universities. Scholarships are valued at up to $20,000 each.
About the Bid O'Sullivan Teaching Scholarships

Since 1999 the Department of Education, Training and the Arts has offered the Bid O'Sullivan Teaching Scholarships annually to assist Year 12 students from rural and remote areas (new window) 218k who have chosen teaching as their career.

The scholarships provide financial assistance to the student while studying an undergraduate education course at a Queensland university. Each scholarship is valued at $20,000 (before tax).

QATSIF QCE Scholarship
QATSIF will provide 2 year scholarship funding to a small number of selected secondary schools across Queensland to support Indigenous students commencing Year 11 in 2010. QATSIF will fund successful schools to provide scholarships to students to complete their Queensland Certificate of Education.

Lambert McBride Bursary
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary students are invited to apply for a grant under the Queensland Government's Lambert McBride Perpetual Education Bursary.

Students enrolled in second or third year studies at any Queensland tertiary institution can apply for a grant of $5000.

The Bursary, established by the Queensland Government to recognise the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Constitutional referendum, is named in honour of the late Lambert McBride - an advocate and lobbyist for Queensland Indigenous rights.

2008-2009 Lambert McBride Bursary Recipient

Congratulations to Jasmin Onus who is in her third year at James Cook University undertaking a joint degree in Law and Business.

Jasmin comes from the Bindal tribe of the Townsville region and the Gunditjamara tribe of the Gippsland area in Victoria. Since being at primary school Jasmin has always aspired to study law and eventually she would like to apply what she has learnt to challenge, change and develop policies that affect Indigenous people. Her ultimate goal is to practice as a lawyer and eventually become a magistrate.

Grants and Allowances

Indigenous Lighthouse Grants
Indigenous Lighthouse Grants of up to $25 000 are available to schools, TAFE Institutes, individual artists and arts organisations, who are able to demonstrate best-practice in Indigenous programs.

These grants aim to create new innovative approaches to Indigenous education, training and the arts by stimulating collaborative projects across at least two of the three sectors.

The Indigenous Lighthouse Grants are funded by each of the three sectors. Current strategies for the three sectors which drive improvements in outcomes for Indigenous people are:

Indigenous Education Strategic Initiative Program

The IESIP-SRA grant provides supplementary assistance to state schools with Indigenous student populations to progress educational outcomes for these students.

Indigenous Language Speaking Students ESL-ILSS

ESL-ILSS is provided for the delivery of intensive English speaking language tuition to eligible Indigenous students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

ESL-ILSS is supplementary assistance that aims to facilitate the entry of eligible Indigenous students into formal education and enable these students to actively participate in classroom activities using Standard Australian English.
ITAS - In-Class Tuition

ITAS is for the purpose of providing supplementary tutorial assistance to improve educational outcomes of Indigenous students.

For ITAS In-class Tuition, it is to improve English literacy and numeracy attainment of Indigenous school students who have not met the Years 3, 5 and 7 benchmarks or who are at risk of not meeting the benchmarks.
ITAS - Year 9, 10, 11 & 12 Tuition

ITAS is for the purpose of providing supplementary assistance to improve educational outcomes of Indigenous students. ITAS Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 Tuition is to improve learning outcomes of Indigenous students and to increase retention and increase completion of study plans.
