Crossing Cultures is a training initiative developed by the department to broaden employees' understanding of both the cultural factors common to most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the cultural factors of the local community in which they work.
In recognising the diversities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages and beliefs throughout the state, the department recognises the need for employees to develop both a broad understanding of cultural factors common to most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as the cultural factors of the local community in which they work.
With this in mind, the department believes the development and implementation of cultural awareness training is best done at the local level, under the guidance and leadership of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
Cultural Awareness training is articulated in the Professional Development Agenda 2006-2008.
All schools are responsible for delivering the first stage of the Crossing Cultures package.
All schools are encouraged to take part in The Big Picture: A hidden history of Australian History.
The Crossing Cultures package has been developed by the Indigenous Students Support Unit (ISSU), Cairns and comprises of a number of modules.
