On the eve of Child Protection Week, the Bligh Government has welcomed a $1.4 million grant to help boost literacy and numeracy skills in primary school children in the care of the state. Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the Federal Government funding would support a pilot program to teach foster carers in low socio-economic areas intervention and support strategies to help at-risk students.

The 2008-09 State Budget will deliver a major boost to education, including new schools, more teachers and teacher aides, and a significant increase for state school maintenance. Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the initiatives were part of the Bligh Government's commitment to building a clever, skilled and creative Queensland.

A new personalised tutoring program has given extra support to more than 19,000 primary school students with literacy problems since it was introduced in 2007. Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the program, which is running again this year, was continuing to help students struggling with literacy in their upper primary years.

State and non-state schools in five regional areas will benefit from the State Government's new $10 million four-year pilot program which aims to enhance Indigenous students' educational achievements. Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the Indigenous Education Support Structures pilot program would operate in the Mount Isa, Cairns, Rockhampton, Ipswich/Inala and Cunnamulla/Charleville education cluster sites.

Today the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education officially launched National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2008 by announcing a $40 million literacy and numeracy initiative. The Rudd Government will invest $40.2 million in 29 literacy and numeracy pilot projects in schools across Australia.
