What the department is doing

The department has increased the whole-of-organisation Internet bandwidth link that schools and corporate offices share.

Work is now underway with telecommunications providers to upgrade internet connectivity including content filtering and proxy systems.

Operational by the end of Term 4 2009, this work aims to improve Internet connection speeds for schools and corporate offices alike.

The department is also working to minimise interruptions from 9am and 3pm (the peak period) by limiting the rollout of all software updates and patches during these times.

Advertising banners and the like are now stripped from websites.

Soon, access to core online learning services such as The Learning Place and OneSchool will be given priority over access to other websites.

Additionally, everyone in the department can play a key role in improving connection speeds.

The department's content filtering and proxy systems represent the infrastructure that creates a safe online learning environment for students. The upgrade to this infrastructure will continue to provide stringent safety measures.
