Everyone uses the Internet for school work, for research, to keep in touch with friends and for fun. One of the problems with using the Internet at school is that it can be slow. Your Internet connection at school may be slow because there are too many users or the users are trying to do too much.

The Internet connection at your school is limited and if you want to use the Internet and not be slowed down, there are some things you can do. This list shows you some things you can do to make the Internet connection at your school faster.

Sending emails to your friends
Sending emails to your friends can slow down the network, even if they are sitting next to you.
- Solution
  If you are going to see your friends later on, don't send them an email. If you do need to send emails to your friends, don't do it during class time and don 't attach files unless you really need to.
Internet
Many Internet email sites rely on advertising to generate income. When you are on these sites the ads constantly refresh, which slows the network down.
- Solution
  Use you school email account when you are at school. This will save on Internet downloads and free-up the network for everyone.
Downloading large files
Some files and file types are larger than others and downloading these can slow down the network.
- Solution
  Don't download large files unless you really need to. If you do need to, see if you can download the files during break time or before or after school.
MSN messaging
While messaging is a great way to communicate with your friends, it is also a great way to slow down the network.
- Solution
  Use messaging outside of school. This will help to keep the Internet download speeds fast.
Doing too many things at once
While computers and the Internet allow you to do many things at once, it causes the network to slow.
- Solution
  Access only one website at a time and don 't run multiple downloads.
Are you using up your Internet quota too quickly?
If your school provides you with a limited amount of Internet access every month, you may be using it up looking at unnecessary web sites.
- Solution
  Use the Internet wisely. Every page you view uses some of your Internet access quota. You don't have to save the page for it to be included in your Internet use. Playing music over the Internet will also use up a lot of your quota.
Do you get a lot of Spam?
Most people get Spam emails. These emails usually come from companies trying to sell you something and can cause the network to slow down.
- Solution
  If you receive Spam, don't respond to it and don't forward it. This just adds to network traffic.
