ICT Indigenous Extension Program

Learning intentions

The project seeks to:
Provide access to quality professional development and learning opportunities for staff in remote communities;

Address social disadvantage by offering localised learning solutions to support staff working in remote communities;

Enhance the professional standards of teachers and wider community in remote Queensland; and

Establish partnerships with agencies and organisations to coordinate the delivery of services and share knowledge and expertise about blended models of learning which engage learners through the use of ICT.

The program has three major components

Student

3 Day Virtual Technology Bootcamps delivered from Cairns to Cape York schools.

With the ability to access high speed internet connections and online communication tools, cross campus Technology Bootcamp with students and teachers from schools in Cape York are offered. The students have the opportunity to learn from facilitators outside of their community, work in cross-campus teams on challenges and collaborative tasks via webcam. They have the opportunity to share their experiences in blogs and wikis and continue to network after the event.

The Virtual Technology Bootcamp project, encourages students to enhance their ICT skills through intensive animation, robotics, game developing workshops all while experiencing personal, teamwork and physical challenges such TaiBo and Playstation Eye Toy physical challenges.

Teachers

Fortnightly ICT workshops delivered via PD in a Box data conferencing system. Teachers, community teachers and students are engaged in professional development workshops and the development of ICT resources for students as well as professional development and support in completing the ICT Pedagogical Licence or ICT Certificate.

The flexibility of the virtual delivery allows provision of PD and other support services all year round including during the often inaccessible times of wet season and community events. With the PD In A Box system, there is no time off class, no travel expenses and PD when required.

Leaders

ICT Across The School focuses on the development of whole school ICT plans and subsequent professional development.
