21 departmental staff accredited with national qualification
Twenty-one of the department's IT support workers graduated with a nationally accredited qualification thanks to skills they've learned on the job.
The 21 graduates, all staff members of the department's Information and Technologies Branch's Service Centre, completed a Certificate IV in Information Technology (Help Desk) through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.
RPL recognises skills a person holds, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred.
Each of the graduates achieved the qualification with support and guidance from the Service Centre's Capability Development Team - a unit established less than a year ago to help new employees through induction and training.
Service Support Director John Woolnough says the Capability Development Team is helping address the information technology skill shortages that affect our state.
'It's very fitting that through our capability team, we are contributing to the Premier's Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland target of three out of four Queenslanders holding trade, training and tertiary qualifications.
'We understand the need to develop our workforce. Our new graduates have sent a strong message to other employees that they can have a greater say in, and ownership of, their own career paths and career development.'
The department's goal is to not only develop IT support staff for their current role, but also ensure they have the skills for further roles in the IT industry.
The Capability Development Team assessed all aspects of the induction and training program.
The existing programs were modified and new modules created to ensure all staff met the requirements of the certification through the completion of all modules of the induction program.
This essentially meant that staff satisfied the RPL requirements for Certificate IV certification through the normal course of their daily work.
Graduation day was Friday, November 26 2010.
At the day, an excellence award was presented to ICT Service Support in recognition of their Capability Development Team's successful completion of the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Help Desk).
The award was presented by Axiom College Managing Director Mike Brisbane.
