Smart Classrooms Planning Cycle
Overview
The Smart Classrooms Planning Cycle provides schools with a mechanism for planning, measuring and reporting on their progress towards making ICT and eLearning integral to teaching and learning. It is an important part of the Department's Strategic Plan.
Three key elements make up the planning cycle.
- The School ICT eLearning Census is an annual data collection survey of schools that helps establish each school's ICT eLearning Index planning level, calculates annual School ICT eLearning Grants and informs strategic planning processes.
- The School ICT eLearning Index measures the level of maturity that schools have developed across the four ICT eLearning Drivers to ensure that ICT and eLearning is integral to learning in every school.
- The School ICT eLearning Plans are mandatory annual resourcing plans developed by all state schools. Through them, schools detail their ICT eLearning action areas and how they intend to allocate resources to meet their individual targets for each ICT eLearning Driver.

The Smart Classrooms Planning Cycle is used to:
- gather and analyse data collected from School ICT eLearning Census returns
- calculate all School ICT eLearning Grant allocations
- provide each school with a School ICT eLearning Index Report
- report on the integration of ICT into curriculum delivery
- collect information on a range of school strategic planning and resourcing.
Main objective
To support schools to develop and sustain an eLearning culture.
Achievement of the objective
Schools are encouraged to form a school leadership team, which may include the principal, deputy principal, heads of department, heads of curriculum heads of special education and other school leaders.
This team may work in cooperation with a school-driven ICT eLearning steering committee.
The team could undertake these activities to reflect on past and present activities and to inform future planning:
- analyse and reflect on its School ICT eLearning Plan action areas to ensure currency and alignment with other school strategic planning (such as the School Planning, Reporting and Reviewing Framework)
- analyse and reflect on its School ICT eLearning Index Report
- analyse and reflect on data collected by its School ICT eLearning Census return.
It’s best practice for the team to meet regularly. This helps ensure that all team members drive the action areas that they are responsible for.
Also, the team should regularly consult the community, school staff and students. This helps the entire school community to value and own an eLearning direction.
