Not since chalk was introduced into classrooms have teachers been given a tool of trade that will make such a difference to their work. Late last month, 1500 Queensland state school teachers received laptop computers for their professional use.
Giving teachers a tool of trade that most other knowledge workers have had for years — the computer — is an important platform of the Smart Classrooms initiative.
All teachers in the West Moreton education district and a cohort of teachers from the Sunshine Coast and Cairns areas are participating in this first for Queensland.
All teachers in the trial have been given a CD (along with their laptop computers) packed with teaching resources to further polish their ICT skills.
Online support and training are also being offered and peer support, through an online Blackboard community, will greatly help teachers learn from each other about new ideas for incorporating ICT into their teaching.
The roll-out of 1500 computers across the state (the bulk are in the West Moreton education district) will test the ICT infrastructure and support networks to ensure our IT system can handle the volume of traffic generated by the laptop computers.
The outcomes of the trial for students and teachers will be evaluated and will help inform any future provision of computers for teachers across all of Queensland state schools.
