Intranets in Schools
Latest News
The first stage of the Intranets in Schools pilot has concluded. The 13 state schools involved are now providing feedback. Their input will help develop the most suitable options for rolling out intranets to all state schools.
Overview
Intranets are similar to websites, but they are private and secure. They are used internally within organisations throughout the globe to communicate important information among employees.
Intranets within schools have the potential to change the way staff and students gain school information.
To help develop the right intranet solution for Queensland’s state schools, teaching and administration staff of 13 schools have been piloting intranets that use the same platform as OnePortal.
These intranets have been customised to each pilot school through school crests and mottos. Whenever a staff member opens Internet Explorer, their school intranet appears as the homepage.
The pilot intranets provide easy access to curriculum resources, classroom notes and a range of school-based administrative tools. By linking seamlessly to OnePortal, they are helping school staff to access corporate information and network with their colleagues statewide.
Intranets for schools will not replace schools’ Internet websites.

Main objectives
The main objectives of Intranets in Schools are to help schools:
- enhance communication
- teach through technology
- integrate the curriculum
- improve general school administration
- access a standard layout of information consistent through all schools.
Achievement of the objective
The Department will help ensure that:
- individual school requirements are considered
- the intranet has a user-friendly interface, which will not require a high level of ICT skill to use
- teachers are empowered to use intranets as learning tools to facilitate technology curriculum-integration
- students use technology in learning.
Intranets in Schools and OnePortal: What’s the difference?
Intranets in Schools were piloted by 13 schools. The pilot intranets are built on the same platform as OnePortal: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Each pilot intranet is hosted locally at each school.
OnePortal is the Department’s corporate intranet. While OnePortal will replace EdInfo and Employee Portal, it has many more features than a standard intranet.
OnePortal allows staff to create their own My Site: a personal site where they can manage and store documents, content, links and contacts in a central location.
OnePortal also features team sites. These are online spaces where staff across the state can collaborate with each other using document libraries, calendars, wikis, discussion boards, project tasks and much more.
