from course participants:
"Participating in this course enabled me to really think about how I integrate ICT into my everyday classroom environment. I am challenged to continue to find new ways to use ICT in a real and meaningful way with young students."
"Thanks for the opportunity. Thanks for the learning. Thanks for the support. Thanks for the sharing. Thanks for the journey - it was a 'trip!' Thanks to my school for supporting my inclusion and to my colleagues who had to put up with me - they're all now very much looking forward to their own licence journeys."
This course does not teach ICT skills.
The ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course runs for 10 weeks.
- In the first six weeks, participants enhance their understanding about the role of ICT in teaching and learning. They also learn how this role relates to the Smart Classrooms Professional Development Framework.
- In the final four weeks, participants reflect on and document their practices. They also work towards creating their digital portfolios, which they need to submit when applying for the ICT Pedagogical Licence.
- The break between blocks gives participants time to demonstrate their understanding of concepts learned in the course. The course is not facilitated during the break.
The course is offered online, in a facilitated mode, with weekly participation required.
During the course, participants need to devote five hours a week to learning. This time does not take into account the construction of a digital portfolio. Also, this time may vary depending on Internet access speed and each participant's previous experience with online learning.
Professional development pathways
The ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course is a key component of the Department's Professional Development Pathways for Teachers initiative.
Teachers who are awarded an ICT Pedagogical Licence may undertake an additional assessment component and pay an assessment fee to receive a voucher they can redeem at a participating university for credit towards:
- one-eighth of a suitable Master's degree or graduate diploma
- one-quarter of a suitable graduate certificate.
This is an excellent opportunity for teachers who would like to enrol in a postgraduate course or for those currently enrolled with a university.
Main objective
The main objective of the ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course is to help make ICT integral to learning by providing teachers with the opportunity and guidance to explore the role of ICT within teaching, learning and curriculum management. Following the completion of the course, teachers need to submit a digital portfolio for accreditation with the ICT Pedagogical Licence.
Achievement of the objective
The Department helps ensure that:
- teachers undertaking the ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course receive quality facilitation by accredited online learning coordinators
- the ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course aligns with the Smart Classrooms Professional Development Framework
- teachers undertaking the ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course will have the opportunity to seek university credit for their study.

Exploring the role of ICT in the classroom
A group of 200 teachers are one step closer to gaining accreditation for their ICT Pedagogical Licence after recently completing the 10-week ICT Online Curriculum Integration Course.
The course is a Smart Classrooms initiative designed to support teachers working toward the ICT Pedagogical Licence.
It provides them with the opportunity to learn more about the role of ICT within teaching, learning and curriculum management.
After a long absence from study, Brisbane School of Distance Education teacher Kerri Marshall was surprised at how easily she was able to balance the course with full time work.
`Having not done any study for some time, I was somewhat nervous and overwhelmed to begin with and very curious as to how it would all be presented.
`The tasks and readings were available online and could be accessed at any time. I found this to be really convenient as it allowed me to fit the study around my schedule.’
Emerald State School teacher Cresta Richardson, who recently returned to work after parental leave, said the course inspired her to reflect further on the benefits of incorporating ICT into the classroom.
‘After returning to school I found the course sharpened my thinking about the implementation of ICT, my teaching practice and the learning outcomes for students. It was well worth the effort.’
The course is offered online in a facilitated mode with weekly participation required. Participants have the opportunity to use a range of Web 2.0 tools such as wikis, blogs, chat rooms and discussion forums.
A further 130 teachers are enrolled as current participants in the course and are working toward the ICT Pedagogical Licence.
The next round commences on 21 July and registrations will open in late May.
