supports teachers to realise a key aspect of the Smart Classrooms' vision for 21st century teaching and learning: digital pedagogies.
Digital pedagogies move the focus from adding ICT tools on to teaching and learning strategies, to a way of working in a digital world.
The Smart Classrooms Professional Development Framework is a guide for planning professional learning with ICT.
The framework is designed for teachers to reflect on and strengthen their beliefs and practices in using ICT for teaching and learning, regardless of which key learning area or phase of learning they teach.
The framework offers:
- clear expectations for schools and teachers about how ICT can be used effectively to support and extend student learning
- assistance for teachers in assessing where they currently are in their own practices of using ICT for learning
- pathways for teachers to build their professional knowledge, practice, values and relationships in making ICT integral to learning.

about the framework is available.
The framework consists of three levels. At each level, teachers receive formal acknowledgement of their competency.
Describes and recognises a base level for teacher ICT use |
|
Acknowledges teachers who effectively integrate ICT into teaching and learning |
|
Acknowledges teachers who make ICT integral to teaching and learning, and demonstrate leadership of same within schools |
Teachers can use the framework to determine where they are at in their practices, and which level they are working toward.
The framework aligns with statewide, national and international teaching standards:
- School ICT Index
- Queensland Professional Standards for Teachers
- National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching
(new window)
- Education Technology Standards released by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
How to use the framework
The Smart Classrooms Professional Development Framework guides the types of professional development that are most relevant to teachers and informs which providers are quality assured to deliver customised services to schools.
It represents a significant change away from ICT skills training by promoting effective pedagogies as the foundation for using ICT in redesigning and delivering curriculum and improving student learning outcomes.
The framework raises the bar of expectations for teachers working with ICT.
Teachers can use the online self-assessment tool
to determine how their pedagogical practices using ICT compare against indicators and to identify which level of the framework they should work toward.
They can undertake a range of professional development activities, including the Smart Classrooms Initiatives for Teachers, to work towards the indicators of each level of the framework.
Main objective
The main objective of the Smart Classrooms Professional Development Framework is to provide a guide for planning enhanced student and professional learning with ICT.
Achievement of the objective
Through the framework, the department helps ensure that:
- teachers are provided with information about the expectation for how ICT is used in teaching and learning in Queensland schools
- teachers are acknowledged for their work toward making ICT integral to learning.
