Migration and Australian identity

Teaching–learning activities and strategies

Students reflect on their learnings and develop further understandings about how Australia's migration history has shaped current ideas about being Australian.

activity

Students reflect on own experiences and knowledge acquired throughout the unit to respond to the focus questions:

  • What symbols do we associate with 'being Australian' today and how have these changed from the past?
  • How have people and events of the past and present shaped our current ideas about 'being Australian'?
  • How do myths/stereotypes about immigrants shape our views?
  • How are these myths/stereotypes part of institutional racism for example media?
strategy

Teacher selects a wide variety of visual representations to discuss these questions:

  • Which of these images do you think is really Australian? Why?
  • What messages are being given about these groups?
  • Are they racist messages?
