In 2008-09, the Department of Education and Training will invest more than $47 million to promote the professional capabilities of its employees. In addition, extensive 'in-house' development programs enhance individuals' and teams' capabilities and performance.
This investment in professional development is critical to building the capacity, capability and sustainability of the Department's workforce. Only when a workforce is highly skilled can it deliver a robust public education and training system and a dynamic arts sector.
The Department's workforce will be supported to build leadership capability and to engage in targeted state-wide professional development programs that promote quality practice, support professional networks and embrace new technologies.
To promote cohesion, responsiveness and quality of professional development for state school teachers and leaders, the Department of Education and Training has established the Professional Development and Leadership Institute.
Teachers have the greatest impact on student learning. Improving the capabilities of our teachers improves education and training outcomes. Ongoing professional development for teachers in schools and TAFE institutes is essential for these teachers to be effective educators and leaders.
A vast array of professional development initiatives is available for all Departmental employees throughout the various phases of their career - from aspiring through beginning, consolidation and growth, high achieving to transitions. These initiatives include the range of valuable informal and on-the-job professional development activities which take place each day within employees' workplaces.
Responsibility for delivering and accessing professional development is balanced and shared between individuals, schools, work units and the Department.
