The department's workforce is the largest in the Queensland Government and its composition is diverse, including the school and TAFE workforce and regional and central office staff.
At 30 June 2012, the department employed 85 021 people, approximately 35% of the employment total for the Queensland Government.
The teaching workforce comprises approximately 36 000 FTEs in 1239 schools across Queensland. The department also delivers vocational education and training (VET) through 13 TAFE Institutes delivering training from 95 locations across the state.
The department employs teachers, school leaders, teacher aides, public servants and executive leaders.
