Teacher aides support teaching and learning in Education Queensland schools. They work closely with teachers, developing and obtaining resources, setting up and operating equipment, undertaking administrative duties, supervising students and participating in teaching activities under the direction of a teacher.
They provide a wide range of support for students who need assistance to participate in educational activities and achieve learning outcomes.
The Department of Education and Training promotes lifelong learning for all staff, starting with a local and a systemic induction during the first weeks of employment. Teacher aides are then encouraged, through regular Developing Performance conversations with their team leaders, to access relevant development opportunities and/or qualifications.
Developing Performance conversations are intended to enhance the capabilities of all employees. The Queensland Public Service Capability and Leadership Framework (CLF) is a capability framework for public service employees including teacher aides. It provides a guide to the abilities and behaviours expected of employees at different classification levels.
The descriptors of the five capabilities at each level help employees think about their approach to their own work, and to prepare for their next Developing Performance conversation. CLF2 aligns to teacher aide classifications OO2 and OO3. CLF 3 aligns with classification OO4.
Teacher aides who gain Certificate III or higher level qualifications and hold a Senior First Aid Certificate are able to progress into a higher classification at a certain point in their employment.
By investing in their own professional growth teacher aides are better able to effectively support students and teachers, and well placed to progress their own careers.
