RPL Arrangements

Teacher Aides who reach TAOO2 level 04 without a Certificate III or higher qualification are entitled to undertake a Certificate III qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at no cost to the individual.

State Schools have an ongoing obligation to fund RPL for such teacher aides, if requested. (Department of Education and Training Teacher Aides' Certified Agreement 2011, Part 10, 67.0). Schools negotiate costs directly with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

All RTOs must offer RPL for any course they deliver, including:

Alternative Option

There is no need for teacher aides to wait until they become eligible for RPL before undertaking a course. School funding may be available at an earlier stage and the school might welcome the opportunity to stagger payment over several months rather than make a one-off payment for the whole course.

Experienced, eligible teacher aides who do not hold a qualification may choose to enrol in the Certificate IV or Diploma of Education Support. The suitability of these qualifications should be discussed in Developing Performance conversations.

It may be possible to negotiate to undertake a higher level qualification than a Certificate III using the school funding allocated for RPL. Shared costs might be another option if a teacher aide wishes to access one of the higher level qualifications.
