National Professional Standards for Teachers

The National Professional Standards for Teachers External Link were released by the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) on 9 February, 2011.

The Standards make explicit what teachers should know and be able to do across four career stages:

They provide an ongoing basis for teacher reflection and development, and they provide a guide to professional learning.

According to the terms of the Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership, each education jurisdiction, system and sector is to replace existing standards with the new National Professional Standards for Teachers.

In 2012, the Education Queensland Professional Standards for Teachers will continue to be the reference point for classroom teachers and those with a predominantly classroom role, in accordance with the 2010 certified agreement Microsoft® Word document.

Joint Statement

The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) and the Queensland Teachers' Union (QTU) are committed to promoting the professionalism and performance of Queensland teachers employed by DETE.

The Certified Agreement 2010 notes that the Department and the QTU have agreed that changes to the Education Queensland Professional Standards for Teachers and the introduction of additional uses for the standards shall be by negotiation between the parties.

While these negotiations are yet to be finalised, DETE and the QTU will continue to work with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to progress supporting documentation and consider the implementation of the standards at EQ/QTU taskforce meetings.
