Students with Disabilities

In developing an understanding of the learner, education teams can cater for the diversity of students. The following will enable education teams to develop an understanding of disability specific information which may assist in reducing barriers to learning for students with disabilities.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A student with an autism spectrum disorder will learn key concepts from the curriculum and develop the skills to apply these. Some students with an autism spectrum disorder may exceed year level expectations in subject areas of interest, but then have fewer skills in a less preferred area of interest.

Hearing Impairment

A hearing loss may impact on students' ability to:

The student may often be more comfortable in a small group or one-to-one situation. This diagnosis will impact on each student differently at different stages. The student may have additional difficulties in intellect or mobility, or may have a diagnosis in another impairment area.

A student with a hearing impairment will learn key concepts from the curriculum, and develop the skills to apply these. Some students with a hearing impairment may exceed year level expectations in subject areas of interest, but then have fewer skills in other areas.

Intellectual Impairment

Affects on learning for students with intellectual impairment may include ability to:

Students with intellectual impairment will require additional adjustments to be made to enhance educational access, participation and achievement. Adjustments may need to be considered regarding:

Intellectual impairment is a developmental disability, which means various aspects of reduced functioning will be evident in various ways across the developmental lifespan. Present levels of functioning may vary at times depending on a range of environmental and contextual factors.

Physical Impairment

A diagnosis of physical impairment means that the student has met criteria as determined by Education Queensland.

Physical impairment can refer to a range of medical conditions that can impact on:

Vision Impairment

Vision Impairment is any diagnosed condition of the eye or visual system, which results in reduced visual functioning. Disease, damage or injury causing vision impairment can occur to any part of the visual system from the eye, through the visual pathway to the brain.
