In the educational context, 'environment' encompasses the physical, sensory and social nature of learning settings. Teachers are responsible for establishing learning environments that encourage constructive interactions amongst teachers and students to enable students to access and participate in their education.
The environment is not simply physical - for students to learn, they need to feel safe and valued as members of a learning community.
The Diverse Learners section of this website provides additional information about the environmental needs of students with disabilities. The Education Adjustments section of this website provides disability specific information about environmental adjustments.
Schools that reflect optimism, a willingness to adjust the delivery and, where appropriate, the content of the curriculum, and a capacity to cater for differences in the learning needs, interests and performance levels within its student population, demonstrate the underpinnings of a supportive school environment.
