Financial Subsidy for Support of School-based Apprentices and Trainees with Special Needs

Education Queensland provides financial subsidies for Supervising Registered Training Organisations or Schools to provide tutorial support in the areas of literacy and numeracy and note taking or interpreting assistance for School-based Apprentices and Trainees with Special Needs. These subsidies are to support, not replace, the Supervising Registered Training Organisation's responsibility to make 'reasonable adjustments' designed to assist a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity as required under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF), User Choice Arrangements, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 or related legislation. Reasonable adjustment activities could involve modifying or providing equipment, changing assessment procedures, changing course delivery, modifying premises.

Where it is suspected that a school-based apprentice or trainee will experience difficulty with training related to literacy and/or numeracy, tutorial assistance may be requested by the Supervising Registered Training Organisations or Schools. Tutorial assistance that complements support supplied through other assistance will be subsidised for up to 5 hours per competency, to a total of 20 hours. School-based Apprentices and Trainees who have a visual or hearing impairment and require the support of note takers or interpreters may obtain assistance. School-based Apprentices and Trainees for whom English is a second language, may be supported by an interpreter for off-the-job training. The total number of hours of assistance by note takers or interpreters must not exceed the total number of hours prescribed for the off-the-job training.
