Police Interviews and Police or Staff Searches at State Educational Institutions outlines the responsibilities of Principals of State educational institutions in relation to interviews or arrest of students by police, and searches by police or State educational institution staff where the student fulfils the definition, in the Juvenile Justice Act 1992

(the Act), Schedule 4, of a child as a person who has not turned 17 years. Under the Act, children are afforded special rights and protections not afforded to persons who have turned 17 years of age. It is the responsibility of police to direct Principals accordingly where a student is 17 years old or more.
