Basic package
A mobile device that comprises:
Carrier
A telecommunications company that has been designated the service provider for mobile telephone services (e.g. Optus, Telstra, Vodafone)
Data plan
A data plan is part of a service provider's monthly plan offered to users. The data plan is determined by the service provider and allows access to the Internet for web browsing and email. Additional charges apply for use above the plan volume.
IMEI
International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number which is a number unique to mobile phones, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of most devices by entering *#06# into the keypad on most phones.
The number is used by the network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to 'ban' the phone using it's IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, whether or not the phone's SIM is changed.
International roaming
Using the network of a mobile phone carrier in another country with whom the Australian mobile carrier has a commercial network access agreement.
IP WAN
IP wide area network is a managed data service which provides departmental schools and business units of connecting to the Intranet and filtered Internet.
Limited personal use
Use of the device that is expected to take place during the employee's non-work time, incurs minimal additional departmental expense, is infrequent and brief, does not interfere with the operation of the department and conforms to the Code of Conduct.
Mobile device and service
A mobile device is a computing device, typically having a display screen with touch input or a miniature keyboard. Mobile devices may be a mobile or satellite phone or hand held computer such as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
The service may be purchased separately to the device with capability that includes voice only, or voice and data transmission, or data transmission only. Data transmission provides Internet access for web browsing and email.
TAMS
An online Telecommunications and Asset Management Application (TAMS) which provides cost centre owners with detailed validation reports.
