The Department of Education, Training and the Arts is committed to ensuring that all newly appointed employees receive a timely induction that is appropriate to their needs.
Induction refers to the process of assisting an employee adapt to a new work situation and providing them with the initial information they require to contribute effectively to the work unit. Induction is not an in-depth training program. It is primarily intended to ensure new employees have a working knowledge of their responsibilities and entitlements and to indicate where they might find further information that they may need to do their job well.
Appropriate forms of induction apply to newly appointed, transferred or relieving employees and those returning to work after extended absences. Induction involves all permanent, temporary, casual and part-time staff from entry level to senior management. Induction reduces an employee's anxiety about starting in a new work situation or environment. The time taken to complete induction will also vary between individuals, positions and work units. The first two months of employment would be an appropriate timeframe for new employees without prior knowledge and experience to complete an induction program. Local information is ideally provided prior to starting or in the first few days of employment.
