Policy position
The Department of Education and Training (DET) is committed to ensuring that all newly appointed employees receive a timely induction that provides clear expectations for their new role, together with information and resources that enable them to work in accordance with public service principles. Induction is an essential part of employee performance development and management. It contributes to the development of a positive workplace environment by supporting and engaging new employees.
Purpose
This procedure sets out the forms of induction to be provided to employees. The content of an induction will vary according to the individual's level of knowledge and experience.
Local induction provides information about the workplace including systems, policies, procedures, protocols, teams, equipment and facilities that employees need to know to function in their new role. It is helpful to provide a support person to help induct new starters into the local work environment. Human Resources forms and access applications are completed and submitted on the first day. Local induction programs are to include awareness of the application of Right to Information (RTI) and Information Privacy (IP) to the role.
Required training in the Code of Conduct and mandated (for employees working in schools and child care centres) Student Protection training, as well as Risk Management, Information Security Awareness training and a Financial Management program are available to DET employees online through the Learning Place and may be included in, or additional to, a local induction.
Depending on the scope of their role, employees may also undertake specific departmental and/or Public Service inductions. Legislation pertinent to the activities of the department, strategies, policies and procedures, government protocols, industrial instruments and data/document management systems are examples of content that employees in specific roles may be asked to work through over a period of time.
Senior Executive Service officers and policy officers are also expected to complete the Regulatory Assessment Statement (RAS) system online training
.
Scope
Appropriate forms of induction apply to newly appointed, transferred or relieving employees and those returning to work after extended absences. Induction involves all permanent, temporary, casual and part-time staff from entry level to senior management.
Content is to be modified as appropriate for different individuals, positions, work units and other local contexts.
