Temporary residential accommodation is short-term accommodation for a student with a disability, to provide respite for families from caring for their children. The temporary accommodation is usually for a maximum of two weeks at a time, but may be longer in exceptional circumstances.
School transport assistance may be provided to students who have a different home address for the purpose of temporary residential accommodation.
School transport assistance is available for daily travel between the temporary residential accommodation and school. It excludes any travel associated with transporting the student between home and the temporary residential accommodation. Parents/carers are responsible for any transport between home and the temporary residential accommodation.
Parents/carers are also responsible for communicating with the temporary residential accommodation about the student's specialised health requirements, the provision of medication and any specialised equipment, as well as transporting luggage to and from the temporary accommodation.
Luggage should not normally accompany the student to school. Only in special circumstances, where the school and transport operators both agree, can luggage and other equipment accompany the student.
Principals submit these applications directly to Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) and, where possible, reasonable notice for these applications is requested.
The same cost, distance and time limitations apply and where these are exceeded, DTMR will seek the approval of the Principal Advisor, Education Services or delegate.
Short term foster care placements organised by the Department of Communities, or joint care arrangements involving two addresses are not usually regarded as Temporary Residential Accommodation.
