Definitions

Catchment Area

The geographical area from which a school draws its principal intake of students.

Disability

The Minister has approved a policy providing criteria for determining if a person is a person with a disability. This policy is based on the Disability Definition provided in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Disability Standards for Education 2005, it requires that all students seeking enrolment in a state school be given equal rights and given access on the same basis as students who do not have a disability.

Enrolment Package and Agreement

Prior to enrolling children at a State school, certain information is provided to parents, this includes an Enrolment Agreement to be (voluntarily) signed by parents and principals. Enrolment agreements set out the rights, responsibilities and expectations that each party brings to the education relationship at that particular school and includes documents on a range of school policies, including information on programs and services for students with disabilities.

Special Education

Means the educational programs and services:

An education program that occurs at approved schools as documented in The Directory of Special Education Programs and Services in Queensland State Schools (new window) Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet where high levels or different types of specialised educational support are provided for students with disabilities.

Special Education Service

Services that may be available to support students in school include advisory visiting teachers, early special education advisory teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, school transition officers, guidance officers and orientation and mobility teachers.

Specialised Educational Program(s)

An educational program not usually offered by a local primary or secondary State school.
