Boys Gender and Schooling > About >

From the Minister

The world that young men and boys face in the 21st Century is challenging. They live and will work in a networked and increasingly complex global village that many of their parents and teachers have never experienced. In a service-oriented, knowledge-based economy where work and family roles and responsibilities are radically changing, it is important that education broadens rather than narrows boys' and girls' life chances and life options.

Traditionally, different values have been attached to particular knowledge or skill areas for males and females. Such gender divisions are no longer acceptable or viable. All students need the skills necessary to adapt to constantly changing work situations and they need to be able to communicate effectively with diverse communities across the globe.

This website provides school communities with data, research and examples of practice that will facilitate shared community understandings about the challenges that face young men and boys today and into the future.

Minister for Education, Anna Bligh MP
