Conclusion

In the new century the pace and scope of change in the western world has continued to increase. Big economic and social shifts have impacted on people's personal, work and community lives. Uncertainty has increased anxiety around many issues, including boys and education. The truth is, in the future boys (and girls) will rely more heavily on education for economic security than ever before. Too many are at educational risk.

The media often adopt a 'sex wars' approach that sets up boys against girls as if education were an academic wrestling match. However, the best work in schools rejects this adversarial view and recognises the diversity of boys' behaviour, participation and achievement. By asking 'Which boys?' and 'Which girls?' have the poorest outcomes and why, new research offers promise.
