What about the boys?

Introduction

Issues about boys are concerning communities and their schools in many westernised nations around the world. In Australia, enquiries have been held by the New South Wales government  and the Commonwealth government (2002). Projects and policies on boys' education continue to be developed.

Despite the increasing availability of strong research and detailed data analysis, the 'boys' debate can be contentious and emotionally charged, often generating 'more heat than light' (Kenway 1997). For schools and their communities seeking genuine progress, it is useful to understand some key factors influencing current debates about boys' education.
