Step 2. Investigating a Disability

The school team should include appropriate specialist staff when investigating a possible disability.

Investigating a possible disability involves gathering data on both the (a) impairment and (b) associated activity limitations and participation restrictions.

a) Impairment

Diagnosis or specialist assessment of the impairment is required from the relevant specialists listed for each EAP disability category.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

a registered paediatrician, psychiatrist or neurologist

Hearing Impairment

an audiologist or otolaryngologist

Intellectual Impairment

a guidance officer/psychologist and senior guidance officer

Physical Impairment

a registered paediatrician, neurologist, orthopaedic surgeon, geneticist or rheumatologist

Speech-Language Impairment

an Education Queensland speech-language pathologist

Vision Impairment

a registered ophthalmologist or in cases of cerebral vision impairment, a registered paediatrician or neurologist

b) Activity Limitations and Participation Restrictions

Description of activity limitations and participation restrictions is required from members of the school team using information gathered in Steps 1 and 2. The evidence required to describe the activity limitations and participation restrictions for each EAP disability category is highlighted in each disability section of this handbook.

Definitions, criteria and specific processes for each EAP disability category are also outlined in each disability section of this handbook.
