International opportunities

International Services within DET International offers students and educators a range of international exchange programs, study tours, scholarships and prizes to enable students to develop the attributes they need to become successful global citizens. Opportunities are also provided for teachers and school leaders to undertake professional development and international immersion experiences to enhance their cultural awareness and language and teaching skills and to make a positive difference to the quality of learning in Queensland schools.

Queensland/Quebec Commonwealth Games Student Exchange

If you're looking for an experience you'll never forget, apply for the Queensland/Quebec Commonwealth Games Student Exchange. As part of this unique experience, students will have the opportunity to travel to Quebec for 6-weeks, attend selected Commonwealth Games events, host a student from Quebec and more! Opportunities for students

Queensland Swiss/German Student Exchange Program (QSGSEP)

Improve your language skills by participating in a reciprocal nine-week student exchange program.Open to eligible students of French, German or Italian undertaking Year 11 at time of application. Students will be abroad from November to January (All school sectors).

Applications are now closed for 2017.

StuditaliA Prize

Win a four-week study opportunity in Italy. The prize includes airfares, insurance, accommodation, tuition and most meals. Open to eligible students of Italian undertaking Year 12 at time of application. Students will be abroad from November to December. (All school sectors).

Applications are now open and close 28 April 2017.

Iwasaki Sangyo Scholarship

Win a four-week study opportunity in Japan. The prize includes airfares, insurance, accommodation, tuition and most meals. Open to eligible students of Japanese undertaking Year 11 at time of application. Students will be abroad from November to December. (All school sectors).

Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp

Win a two-week cultural opportunity in China. Winners will represent Queensland and undertake cultural activities throughout the two-week program. The prize includes airfares, insurance, accommodation, tuition and most meals. Open to eligible students of Chinese undertaking Year 11 at time of application. Students will be abroad from July to August. (State school sector only).

The Premier's Anzac Prize

Prize winners will have the opportunity to participate in a tour of Anzac battlefields across Europe and attend the dawn service on Anzac Day. The prize is open to students in Years 8-11 and includes all travel, accommodation, most meals and entry into all sites visited. For more information visit the Premier's Anzac Prize page. (All school sectors).

Applications open Semester 1 for travel in April/May the following year.

Anzac Indigenous Cultural Study Tour

This tour aims to celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in their context of their contribution and sacrifice in Australia's involvement in wars and conflicts.

Visit the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and tour New Zealand to learn about another Indigenous culture while visiting key Anzac sites.

The tour includes all travel, accommodation, most meals and entry into all sites visited. For more information visit the Anzac Indigenous Cultural Study Tour. (Years 9 - 12, students participating in the Solid Pathways or Indigenous Student Ambassador Network programs only).

Applications open 23 January 2017 and close on 21 April 2017.

Opportunities for teachers

Queensland/Quebec Commonwealth Games Student Exchange

Two chaperones required to assists students on their journey to and from Quebec and undertake professional development opportunities at a school. Chaperones will also have the opportunity to attend selected Commonwealth Games events in April 2018. Chaperones are required to escort Year 11 students to and from Europe. This is an affordable way for French, German or Italian language teachers to undertake professional development while overseas. Airfares, insurance, up to four nights accommodation and some meals are included. Teachers will be abroad during November and/or January. (All school sectors).

Iwasaki Sangyo Scholarship

Apply to chaperone Year 11 students to Japan. You will be placed within a Japanese school to undertake professional development activities and assist the school with English language learning. Airfares, insurance, accommodation and some meals are included. Teachers will be abroad from November - December. (All school sectors).

Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp

Be a chaperone and participate in the Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp. You will represent Queensland at the camp and supervise five Year 11 students throughout the duration of the camp. Chinese speakers (preferably language teachers) are encouraged to apply. Airfares, insurance, accommodation and most meals are included. Teachers will be abroad from July to August. (State school sector only).

Osaka Teacher Training Program

Increase your Japanese language capabilities and cultural understanding by undertaking a three-week intensive customised course at the Kansai Institute, Osaka. Designed for Japanese language teachers, the program includes airfares, insurance, accommodation and most meals. Teachers will be abroad from December to January. (State school sector only).

Saitama Teacher Study Tour

If you have an appreciation for Japanese culture, and wish to embed an international focus into your subject area, you may be eligible to undertake a two-week placement within a Japanese school in Saitama. The program includes airfares, insurance, accommodation and most meals. Teachers will be abroad during September - October. (State school sector only).

Central Java Teacher Training Program

Increase your Indonesian language capabilities and intercultural understanding by undertaking a four-week course at the Semarang State University. Designed for Indonesian language teachers, the program includes airfares, insurance, accommodation and most meals. Teachers will be abroad from September to October. (State school sector only).

Hubei Teacher Training Program

Increase your Chinese (Mandarin) language capabilities and cultural understanding by undertaking a three-week intensive customised course at the Wuhan University, Hubei. Designed for Chinese language teachers, the program includes airfares, insurance, accommodation and most meals. Teachers will be abroad from September to October. (State school sector only).

Partnerships with Asialink and the Asia Education Foundation

DET International will partner with Asialink and the Asia Education Foundation to support cultural capability development through the provision of best practice, contemporary professional learning programs. (State school sector only).

Programs will be advertised via OnePortal and DET International communications as they become available.

School Opportunities

For state schools only

Taiwanese Teaching Assistants

Schools currently teaching Mandarin (traditional or modern) have the opportunity to host a Taiwanese student undertaking a Master's program for two terms. The student will assist your language teacher in the classroom, providing an excellent opportunity to accelerate learning opportunities. This project provides funding to schools to cover all homestay costs.

School Language Assistant Program

DET International supports schools wishing to participate in the World Education Program's School Language Assistant Program (SLAP) by providing 50% of funding to schools for up to two terms. The program involves the placement of volunteer language assistants into the classroom with the only cost to the school being the provision of accommodation and meals for the duration of the program. There are flexible arrangement options including a volunteer host family, homestay, stipend to help the assistant cover these expenses, and a variety of other options.

Queensland School Leaders Study Tour of China

Designed for school leaders with either current or future plans for the development of Chinese language in their schools. The Confucius Institute at QUT (CIQ), in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training, may provide an opportunity for up to 10 Queensland school leaders to visit Jiangsu Province, China. Subject to approval it is proposed that participants visit schools, undertake briefings with the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, and the Hanban of China in Beijing (including a visit to the Hanban Confucius Institute Global Headquarters). Participants will be abroad from September to October

A free resource available to schools which covers all aspects of sister school relationships, Sister School Guidelines for Queensland State Schools may be obtained in hardcopy upon request to internationalservices@det.qld.gov.au (subject to availability).

NOTE: Where programs involve a selection process, all selections are final and are not appealable. Selections may be made by DET International to ensure the benefits of these programs are spread evenly throughout Queensland.
