Purpose

The purpose of this session is to provide participants with opportunities to define numeracy, to clarify beliefs about teaching numeracy and to develop an understanding of the links between the Mathematics Syllabus and the Number Developmental Continuum.

Participants will:

be aware of current beliefs and understandings about numeracy;
be familiar with current classroom practices that incorporate the principles of effective learning and teaching and the inclusive curriculum;
understand how the Mathematics Syllabus perspective on learning relates to developing numeracy.

Further professional development

View Making the Links: Numeracy, a 35-minute videotape in a kit of the same name, produced by the Department for Education and Children's Services, South Australia, 1997. The videotape shows students from a variety of schools, including a kindergarten, displaying numerate behaviour.
