Changes to legislation and policy clarify that schools are permitted to release personal student information to Queensland Transport and bus operators under certain circumstances.
The Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 gives Queensland Transport the authority to request principals to provide student information for the effective administration of the School Transport Assistance Scheme. Specifically, schools must complete the School Verification Report distributed to schools once per term by Queensland Transport. It is important that schools complete this report as it is a key accountability document for ensuring school transport assistance is provided only to eligible students.
A new procedure has been approved allowing school principals to release student information to bus operators so that operators can deal with misconduct on school bus services. The procedure requires principals to seek the permission of the Executive Director (Schools) or Regional Executive Director to release the information. The processes are set out in SMS-PR-034.
