Second or additional language development is monitored and assessed using the ESL Bandscales (National Languages and Literacy Institute of Australia ESL Development: Language and Literacy in Schools). When students move from one school setting to another, a report on their developing English language proficiency should go with them.

Most ESL students will need continued support for a number of years. ESL teachers are available for collaboration, team teaching and resource development with mainstream teaching staff.
