Guidelines for using Interpreters in Schools
Interpreters should be used in schools for:
- Enrolments
- Parent-teacher interviews/School Report Interviews
- Information dissemination about specific school programs
- Individual student issues or to assist with an educational assessment
On-site interpreting service
On-site interpreting requires a minimum of 3 days notice.
- Determine what language the family speak and if they have a preferred interpreter that they use. Consider ethnicity and gender.
- Complete a Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) booking form which can be downloaded from the Translating and Interpreting Service website
and follow the link to 'TIS forms'
. - Fax the booking form to TIS who will advise about the availability of appropriate interpreters.
Telephone interpreting services
Telephone interpreting should be used if an onsite interpreter is unavailable or if schools need to respond to an emergency situation.
- Complete a Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) booking form which can be downloaded from the Translating and Interpreting Service website
and follow the link to the 'TIS forms'
. - Fax the booking form to TIS who will inform you within 24 hours of the availability of a telephone interpreter.
