Supporting pregnant and parenting students - Resources

A number of resources are available that may provide information to schools on how to support pregnant and parenting young people:

Advice and strategies for the retention and support of pregnant and parenting young people in education - This document provides schools and districts with information about supporting pregnant and parenting students to continue their education

Evaluation Report - The Evaluation of the Lifting Educational Access for Pregnant and Parenting Students (LEAPPS) Project was completed in 2005

Association of Women Educators (AWE) - Resources available through their website include:

• Present, Pregnant and Proud - Keeping pregnant students and young mums in Education (2000) which documents the outcomes of Australia-wide research into the experiences of pregnant and parenting young people. The resource includes 15 recommendations to increase the retention of pregnant and parenting young people in education. This publication was distributed to all state secondary schools in 2000 and to independent schools in 2001
• Step by Step Side by side: How to make your school a great choice for pregnant and parenting students (2002)
• The companion book to Present, Pregnant and Proud which is in two sections:
  • Section 1: an outline of a process for developing and implementing policy and strategy to improve the school completion rates of pregnant young people.
  • Section 2: a professional development program for staff and communities to encourage them to work side by side with each other and pregnant and parenting young people to build positive futures for these young people and their children.
• What it Takes: Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Young People (2010) - Provides an outline of AWE's support for pregnant and parenting young people, detailed case studies of community and school-based programs for pregnant and parenting young people, an overview of effective practice and makes recommendations for the future.
