Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services are available to students with vision impairment enrolled in state schools and in non state schools when receiving support from an Education Queensland Advisory Visiting Teacher, Vision Impairment.
In providing Orientation and Mobility services children with vision impairment may require specific support within and beyond their regular curriculum in order to engage effectively with various environments. Orientation and Mobility services assist students in the development of spatial concepts, orientation and mobility techniques, long cane skills and transition programs. These programs may be delivered within the home, school and community environments.
Orientation and Mobility strategies assist in directing the student's attention to the environment to gather sensory information. Students are encouraged to have ownership within the learning process and independence at a level appropriate to the individual student's development.
Referrals to the DSSU Orientation and Mobility services can be made by the school and or district Advisory Visiting Teacher Vision Impairment through the completion of an Orientation and Mobility request for support form and parent consent form.
Enquiries regarding DSSU Orientation and Mobility services can be made to the Disability Services Support Unit.
