The Department of Child Safety
commenced operation from 20 September 2004. The Department is focussed on protecting Queensland's most vulnerable children and young people.
The Department responds to families in crisis across Queensland 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Department is focussed on preventing children from being abused and neglected
, and has specialised teams of people dedicated to working with families and children who are identified as being 'at risk'.
Its frontline workers operate from Child Safety Service Centres
, supported by zonal offices.
The Child Protection Act 1999
provides the legislative basis for the child protection system. The Department of Child Safety is responsible for the Act's administration and implementation of the Act.
