Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) System

The SCAN (Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect) System External Link provides forums for consultation on complex child protection cases where a multi-disciplinary and inter-agency approach will result in better outcomes for the child and family.

The role of the SCAN System is to ensure a co-ordinated and effective response by those government departments with statutory responsibility for child protection and any other agencies providing services that will contribute to the proposed intervention.

The SCAN Assessment and Management team (AM Team) is the referral point for all matters to be discussed within the SCAN System. The AM Team is comprised of representatives from:

Senior Guidance Officers are core AM Team representatives for the Department of Education and Training. Their role is to assist state and non-state school principals with the referral of cases to SCAN AM Team meetings. The Senior Guidance Officers collect information from school personnel to provide updates for case reviews. They also provide feedback to principals and Guidance Officers following case discussion at AM Team meetings.

The role and responsibilities of SCAN System members and the relevant information sharing protocols are outlined in sections 159I-159L of the Child Protection Act 1999. Personal information collected by employees of Education Queensland for provision to SCAN Teams must be dealt with according to these sections of the legislation.
