The Peer Support Program
is an evidence based, universal mental health promotion program, designed to provide students with a supportive learning environment in which to develop skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to make healthy life decisions. It is a peer led, skills based, experiential learning program based on older students supporting younger students' transition through physical, emotional and social milestones in an inclusive and supportive environment.
The Peer Support Program comprises Teacher training workshops which skill teachers in implementing the Peer Support Program in their schools. Comprehensive learning materials are supplied to enable student leaders to be trained and to conduct peer led sessions. The learning materials focus on orientation/transition, relationships, optimism, resilience, values and anti-bullying.
The Peer Support Program when implemented in schools consists of leadership training for senior students and peer led sessions. These normally run for a period of a week for 8 sessions. Sessions are facilitated by Peer Leaders with the support of a supervising teacher. Each group consists of 8-10 younger students and 2 Peer Leaders.
