Celebrating Democracy Week, 18 - 22 October 2004

Celebrating Democracy Week this year will be from 18 to 22 October. DEST is working with Curriculum Corporation as national manager for Celebrating Democracy Week this year. Pat Hincks from Curriculum Corporation (telephone 03 9207 9600, email: patricia.hincks@curriculum.edu.au) will be coordinating the Grants program.

Schools will be invited to apply for Celebrating Democracy Week grants of up to $500 for individual schools and $1500 for school clusters to showcase civics and citizenship education activities. As in previous years schools could celebrate the week by conducting community forums, student forums and debates, commemoration activities, multicultural events, mock parliaments, radio broadcasts, drama presentations, and special learning programmes involving members of parliament, local government, police, community volunteers and Indigenous Australians, for instance.

There will also be an Every Voice Counts! Student Forum competition - a chance to win a 2 day behind-the-scenes tour of Canberra. Year 10 and 11 students will be asked to write a 150 - 200 word response to a civics and citizenship education theme.

Schools will receive a brochure and a poster about Celebrating Democracy Week in August. This will give details about how to apply for the grants and how to enter the competition.
