Is Australia Over Governed?

Year Level: 7

SOSE Outcome Levels: 4 and 5

Author: Rosalie Shawcross
Position: Teacher
School: Ipswich East State School

There are many people who believe that Australia is over governed. They feel that we would be better off if we removed State Governments and retained only Local and Federal Governments. By using a letter to the editor [Appendix A], which supports this position, students will discuss the fact that many people make comments and decisions about political issues without necessarily basing these on fact.

Is Australia a Land of Equality?

Year Level: 7

SOSE Outcome Levels: 3 and 4

Author: John Carney
Position:
School: Parkhurst SS

The concept of human equality is central to questions of democracy. Students at this stage will generally be aware of simplistic cliches such as 'every vote counts', and 'we are all equal' in Australia. This unit encourages them to consider such truisms a bit more deeply. 'People Power' is an appropriate unit in which to examine whether all people have power to participate equally and effectively in Australian democracy. Also, if students are to become active and informed citizens, they need to be encouraged to critically reflect upon the widely held view that Australia is an egalitarian nation. Inequality has major implications regarding citizenship issues at local, national, and global levels.

The Law Rules

Year Level: 7

SOSE Outcome Level: 4

Author: Kerry-Ann McAuliffe
Position: Year 7 Teacher
School: Calliope State School

All communities need rules to organise and protect their members. Laws are legal rules. Breaking a law may result in legal action. In a free democracy rules and laws have a similar purpose: to achieve fairness, justice and security.
