People Power

Year Level: 7

SOSE Outcome Level: 4

Author: Mrs Kay Patterson
Position: Year 7 teacher
School: Redlands College

Often parents and young people express a concern that they're powerless in the 'way the country's changing'. Through this unit, children should appreciate and experience the influence they can have within the school, their rights, responsibilities and the procedures to be followed to bring change. They should extend this knowledge to the community as they study past strategies that achieved change as well as the power of the media and the personal approach. 'Personal character traits, such as respecting individual worth and human dignity, empathy, respect for the law, being informed about public issues, critical mindedness and willingness to express points of view, listen, negotiate and compromise' should develop. (Introducing Discovering Democracy p.7)
